What is a beacon?

A warning beacon is a device designed to attract attention to a specific location. Beacons are one of the most beneficial devices that help to provide safety and security to any area or application.

There are many different types of warning beacons on the market today, from aircraft beacons to telephone beacons, and they are all used for a particular purpose and play a vital role in their application. Beacons are used to assist and support many different applications and continue to work well as they draw the instant attention required create a safe environment. Applications include road traffic safety, flood alerts, emergency vehicles, high rise structures and many more.

Today beacons are electronic devices that light up when power is applied. However beacons have been around for much longer that the modern day! Previously, fires were lit to assist and alert people to a danger – for example used in lighthouses for navigation at sea, or for signalling in war that an enemy was approaching to alert defences. Beacon systems have been used for centuries in this way.
