Warning Signals – Uses and Types

Nov 12, 2018

Have you ever noticed bright flashing lights on establishments, roads, or businesses? These are known as warning signals, and no matter what country or town you visit, you’ll always find these lights in public places for safety or security purposes.

The reason why these devices are a necessity, is because they enable people to minimise the anticipated risks of hazard and major accidents. However, these devices come in various types of warning signals, and with different uses.

Various Types of Warning Signals and their Uses

Signals come in different types: Visual Warning Signals, Audible Warning Signals, and Traffic Management Signals.

Let’s have a brief overview of these types of warning signals:

  • Visual Warning Signals

    1. Visual signals are those that come in pulsing, static, or rotating lights, and emit a bright light. These can be in a colour of choice, usually Red, Amber, Green, Blue or White, and are used as a visual indicator to attract attention in any condition.
    2. These can be used in many different applications, and can usually be seen on construction sites, roads or high ways, in certain establishments such as airports, on tall structures such as cranes, and even on vehicles. See the range here: http://beaconlamps.com/products/

  • Audible Warning Signals

    1. As their name suggests, these signals produce a variety of loud noises to alert people in its vicinity. They can be single tone units, or multi-tone, providing a choice of tones. See the range here: http://beaconlamps.com/products/audible-warning-signals/electronic-sounders/

  • Traffic Management Signals

  1. Most of you are most likely familiar with this kind of signal as they are very often seen on roads, in loading bays, or anywhere that traffic management is required. Traffic signals/lights, or sometimes known as “Multihead Indicators”, are specifically made to manage traffic, for example; dockside signalling, shutter door status, etc. Traffic signals usually come in Red, Green, and Amber coloured lights, to indicate Stop, Caution, and Go.

Visual Warning Signals

If a company or facility mostly uses visual signals, their employees should be informed on what each signal means and what the appropriate reaction should be. This is to prevent panic which could cause more unnecessary incidents. In addition, if visual warning signals are installed as a status indicator, it is imperative that employees are aware of the meaning of lit units and / or colours, to maintain productivity.

Audible Warning Signals

The use of audible signals can sometimes be more effective as a warning, than using visual warning signals. Therefore, this kind of warning signal may be preferred in large crowded areas – depending on selected tone, as audios cannot be obscured by panicking, or large crowds of people.
