Have you ever noticed our products have an IP rating listed in the description?

What is an IP rating? πŸ€”

⚑ AKA Ingress Protection rating system. The IP rating system is a clear and concise guide to ensure a product is suitable for an intended environment before installation. Working as a scale to show how waterproof and airtight an electrical enclosure is.

What determines this? πŸ€”

⚑ The international standard IEC/EN 60529.

Each IP rating is made up of 2 numbers but, what do the numbers mean? πŸ€”

⚑ The first number informs of the protection against solid objects. Which could be anything from your hand to particles of dust.

If you were to install an electrical product in a dusty environment, such as construction sites or sawmills for example, the first number must be a 5 or 6 at minimum. This way, the products electrical circuits are protected from any damage by dust ingress.

⚑ The second number informs of protection from liquids. This can range from dripping water to complete submersion.

If you were installing an electrical product in a marine area, the second number must be at least 7 or 8.

A majority of our products are rated IP65. For a clear breakdown in the table shown, we can determine – IP 6 is dust tight and 5 is protected against water jets.

The IP rating system is an ideal and extremely helpful tool to determine any electrical product. It is widely used to ensure the right product is chosen to meet the criteria before installation.
